INTRODUCTION

KOPI KAKIS ADVENTURE is a 2D Educational Visual Novel game, commissioned by People's Association (PA) of Singapore, as a self-learning tool for their grassroots volunteers to learn about different policies of Singapore and how they may benefit the residents in their neighbourhood.

In this game, players will take on the role of a grassroots volunteer, where they will learn about Singapore’s different policies and, afterwards, inform the citizens of Singapore about these policies. As a grassroots volunteer, players will also establish rapport with some of the residents on an individual level, and explore policy options that may be helpful to them.

The goal of this game is for Singaporean grassroots leaders to practice or to be educated on their activities as a grassroots leader during their off-time. To achieve this, the game will have to not only be educational, but entertaining enough for the grassroots leaders want to return to the game on their own time.

Role & responsibilities

Lead Programmer

As the Lead Programmer for Kopi Kakis, I was responsible for setting up source control, integrating external libraries, setting up and modifying our dialogue system to fit the project's needs.

I was also responsible for delegating tasks to my co-programmer, acting as their code consultant on certain programming issues, and communicating with my team mates and our client company (PA) on the coding progress of our game.


Contributions:

  • Setting up external libraries for development (Cinemachine, YarnSpinner, UPR)

  • Setting up Source Control for project

  • Communicating with clients on programmers' progress on project

  • Creating gameplay systems such as NPCs, story flags, text parsing, quiz

  • Modifying existing libraries to fit project needs (YarnSpinner)

  • Implementing logic behind UI elements

  • Consulting co-programmer regarding Systems in other Gameplay Areas

  • Creating extensive technical and design project documentation in preparation for team handovers

rEFLECTIONS

I would say this was the greatest learning experience for me with regards to coding! With regards to the experience I had at the time, I feel quite proud of what I had achieved with my group for this project.
